Powder Brakes and Clutches

OMSHAM powder brakes use fine magnetic Metal Powder to transmit torque, which combines the smoothness of fluid coupling and high efficiency of friction brakes at engagement.

Easy wide range torque control

Transmission torque control over a wide range can be achieved easily, for transmission torque changes in proportion to the excitation current.

Usable under continuous slip conditions

With the use of magnetic powder to transmit torque, continuous slip on the operating surface is possible and since transmission torque is independent of slip speed, torque transmission performance is always stable.

Stable Torque transmission

With ideal operating surface, torque stability is maintained, even when the current is repetitively switched ON and OFF

Large Heat Capacity

Highly heat tolerant powder and have an ideal cooling structure that can be used under extremely demanding continuous slip conditions.

Smooth engagement and driving

Coefficients of static and dynamic frictions are nearly equal, which eliminates shocks during complete engagement and allows load-proportionate acceleration/deceleration.

Basic Structure and Operation

For ease of explanation, powder clutch structure is shown below. It consists two concentric parts - a driving member and a driven member each supported by their own bearing supports and free to move. In between the driving and driven member, magnetic powder is filled. A excitation coil is placed outside to provide excitation current to the powder.

When coil is not excited, the driving and driven member are free to rotate and remain dis-engaged. When coil is excited, magnetic flux passes through the powder, and powder forms a bridge between the driven and driving member and offers friction. With this, both members gets engaged and torque is transmitted from driving member to driven member. By varying the excitation, the friction force is varied and there by torque transmission from driving member to the driven member.

If any one driving or driven shaft is locked, other shaft offers braking force.

As a option, brakes are offered with Proximity switch along with toothed wheel, for speed feedback.
